The St Vincent de Paul Society
Background

Frederic OzanamThe St Vincent de Paul Society was founded in Paris in 1833. It came about because of the resilience and determination of Frederic Ozanam who, challenged to “prove his faith” decided to take positive action and “show the fruits of this faith”. Inspired by the tireless work of St Vincent de Paul, “visitation of the poor” became the maxim of Frederic and his compatriots. Their work soon expanded to cover people in prisons and those in hospital; the elderly, lonely and dispossessed; in fact any human need. This message spread quickly and was embraced worldwide – the Society was formed and St Vincent de Paul was adopted as the Society's Patron.

Please visit the Society's national website for more information on the St Vincent de Paul Society’s work in New Zealand.

St Vincent de Paul at St Mary's

St Vincent de Paul’s mission to the people of Wellington was launched from St Mary of the Angels. The headquarters of the Wellington Society is in Newtown (Ozanam House, 207-209 Riddiford Street, Newtown phone 389-7122).

The current group at Saint Mary of the Angels comprises 10 parishioners who meet on a monthly basis to discuss work that is required, assess results achieved and to plan strategies as potential problems arise.

We continue to operate on the same premise that the Society was founded – always helping people in need as contemporary society dictates. As the moral code in our society fragments and declines, so the demands on the St Vincent de Paul Society increase.
